After sustaining a serious burn injury on the front line in France, courageous and well-acknowledged soldier Ben Shaw has been sent to recover a rehabilitation hospital in Oxford.
Usually reserved for officers– and not to mention eerily quiet after the insanity of war — Ben has a difficult time adjusting there, at least until a brainwave from his nurse.
Newton Beckworth, more commonly known as Newt, is the man nobody knows what to do with. Suffering from early onset Parkinson’s and unable to serve in the army, Newt volunteers at the hospital, but usually just gets under the staff’s feet.
In Ben, however, he finally discovers his purpose, and the two form a quick and deep connection that transcends the hate and fear of war that rages around them.
But relationships like theirs are not tolerated in the 1940s, and all Ben wants is to get back to the front and serve his country. Can Ben and Newt survive the chaos of the Second World War? And can their relationship survive with them?
